How on Earth does one teach a 2-year-old (who is the world’s greatest backseat driver) that it IS actually acceptable to turn right on red?
Sorry Supergirl, No More Books January 29, 2007
Supergirl’s birthday is 18 days AFTER the age cutoff for starting school. This means she must wait an entire year later, because of those 18 days. For some reason this fact has been annoying me lately. Mostly because I know she would LOVE going to preschool next year. She loves learning, loves hanging out with other kids. I realize all parents (at least MOST parents) think their kid is brilliant, but seriously, ours is pretty darn smart. So I called around all the local preschools inquiring as to just how strict the age cutoff really is. Some said very strict, others a little more lenient. Meaning, if they had empty slots, if the principal/director felt she was ready, etc. Except the Catholic school. They advised they are very rigid with the cutoff date HOWEVER….as of next year they will have a new class for kids who just missed the cutoff. The class will be one day per week instead of two. What sort of activities will they be doing, I asked. To which the reply was: mostly just working on social skills, they won’t be doing anything academic, like the 3-year-old class, because then they would just be bored the next year when they are in the class.
interesting…..
This really got my mind working. So this means I absolutely do not want Supergirl to learn anything this year until she is FINALLY old enough to go to preschool. Because, otherwise, she will be too smart and get into trouble because she is bored. So if she is a quick learner, and catches on to everything taught at school, I should do nothing to challenge her, least she know more than she SHOULD. She already counts, knows her abc’s, can identify letters, shapes, colors. I seriously suck as a parent. Had I only known I would have tried to avoid anything related to learning at all costs. No more songs, no more fingerplays or nursery rhymes. No more reading books. It has to come to an end, that is the best thing I can do for her education. Not teach her.
When did the education system turn into this? I understand kids are not all at the same level, I understand some struggle while others are bored. Is doing your best to keep them at the same level really the answer? Is doing my best to keep my daughter at the status quo, instead of helping her achieve all she is capable of, really the best thing for HER? Or am I just an annoying, unrealistic parent?
You’re nosy! January 27, 2007
After crawling into my bed early this morning and falling back asleep, Supergirl finally woke up. She kept smashing my nose and saying “you’re a piggy, you’re a piggy” Then suddenly she stopped and we had the following conversation:
SG: You are nosy!!!
Me: (slightly offended) I’m nosy?
SG: YES!!!
Me: If I’m nosy then what are you?
Pause….
SG: I’m a rabbit!!
Potty training January 25, 2007
“Look at that turd, that’s a itty bitty baby one. That’s not a big ol’ huge turd. MOM—That one is my FAVOWITE!”
The girl is too verbal for her own good.
I have decided we should try some serious ‘behavior management/bribing’ in the potty training. So far, it’s totally working. We started on Tuesday-dry pants all day, Wednesday-2 accidents, and today-DRY PANTS!!! YAY!! This is after not using the potty at all…ever, for a very long time. Her favorite part (and the one that totally stresses me out) is her wanting to carry her ‘potty’ over to the big one to dump it out. Since her potty is in the play room this means she is carrying pee across the house….scary, yes. Yet, still very exciting!
“There’s No Me Without You” January 23, 2007
I finally found some time to read “There’s No Me Without You” by Melissa Fay Greene. There’s really not much I can say about this book. You simply have to read it yourself. It is an amazing story which she has managed to fill with information about the unimaginable vastness of the AIDS epidemic in Africa. Read it!!!
One way to bide my time… January 19, 2007
Digital scrapbooking. I’m so excited. I’m a little behind and just discovered this concept yesterday. I tried making a ‘real’ scrapbook, but have found I am WAY slow (I have made 2 pages in a year…). So this works out much better for me, in fact I made 4 pages today! I am a beginner, but here is one of my first:

Another homestudy visit. January 15, 2007
Today we completed a follow-up homestudy visit. In our state you must have one of these every 6 months while waiting. It was basically only checking smoke detectors, water temperature, etc. No biggie. Just a reminder that we’re still waiting. She left with a “hopefully my next visit will be a post-placement visit.”
ME TOO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
