Happy Hanukkah

On the drive home from school last week Supergirl asked, “Mom, can we celebrate Hanukkah this year?”
“Hmmmm…. I need to think about that. How do you celebrate Hanukkah? What sort of things do you do?”
“Well, you light a candle every night and you eat some sort of potato, I don’t know what they are called, but they are REALLY yummy.”
Apparently they have been discussing Hanukkah at school and one of her friends has been giving her the scoop as to what Hanukkah is all about (he DOES celebrate Hanukkah). So I began to think, and think, and my main thought was—why not? I did a little research on the internet and my thought is yes, it is a Jewish holiday and tradition, but is the story of Hanukkah really separate from Christianity? And is participating in a cultural/religious tradition while you learn about it a bad thing? Not at all. I was actually beginning to get excited. All set to find a menorah and learn to cook latkes.

However, two days ago Supergirl informed me she was thinking she does NOT want to celebrate Hanukkah this year. Because you have to light candles…….and that’s a fire hazard.
Seriously, what can you do?

That’s great. She’s such a character. We celebrate Hanukkah with Aiden’s friend Lily’s family!
