Fort!!!

The activity drawn from the jar this week was to build an indoor fort.  This, my friends, is EXACTLY why I need an activity jar.  Who doesn’t love an indoor fort?  It is one of those things that literally takes a minute or two to make, is free, not too messy, and is tons of fun.  And yet, for some reason, my kids could probably ask me 50 times to build one and my answer would be, “Not right now.”  Why is that?  Why not?  What is more important in this moment than an indoor fort?  The book I am reading, the internet, my phone call, TV?  Why are those things more important than my children?

This fort was not built because I am such a great mom I simply said “Absolutely!” when my kids asked to have some fun.  This fort was built because I put it on a list of activities that I cut up and put in a jar.  It was on our schedule for this week.  Maybe it wasn’t spontaneous, maybe I wasn’t being a spur of the moment awesome mom.  But we made a fort.  And it is awesome.  And I have two very happy children.  We watched our movie night movie from the fort, and read our bedtime stories in it, and guess what?  I actually was a little spontaneous and suggested they sleep in it—which they thought was very exciting.  So here I am on the couch listening to my two babies fall asleep feeling very content.  I am as happy as they are.  While I am not yet the mom I want to be and/or can be, I feel this summer has been a step in that direction.  Having to schedule fun is not exactly ideal—but at the same time we ARE having fun.  They have my attention.  And I have theirs.  And that is what it’s all about…

PS—-the dogs were also big fans of the fort 🙂

I love it! And I’m laughing because my 11-year-old has been sleeping in his living room fort for four months now. Same with my 8-year-old, but at least HERS is in a bedroom (she lucked out on the gender-lottery: the only girl is the only child with a room to herself… At least until the advent of the FORT!)
    🙂
